Rising like a Phoenix from the ashes

Life’s been crazy but we’re still here. Where shall I begin? I think I’ll begin at the end and work backwards. Khumo and I are currently camping at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital – what a pretty place.

There was a fire in the special dispensary area at Charlotte Maxeke a couple of weeks ago and we had to evacuate. Luckily there were no casualties and all our little kiddies were safely housed at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for a couple of nights or CHOC House until we found new space at NMCH. Not surprisingly the research programme has been a little upset – Khumo is working hard all day on research while I run around like a headless chicken trying to put out fires and plan ahead. We have the most amazing team so everyone is pitching in and doing their best to be flexible and innovative. We’ve also been lucky to have an awesome team at NMCH to work with who have made a very difficult situation a whole lot smoother than it could have been.

We have a new website: www.carecancerkids.co.za

On there you can see the trials that are currently available for kids with cancer, and the research programmes we’re involved in. We’ve managed to publish quite a few research findings in the last year – all there on the website, and more to come this year.

And those of you who like to witness suffering – our team is going to race the 947 Ride Joburg Cycle Challenge again – except this year it’s 97 km instead of 94.7. Kill me now – why not just make it a round 100?! If you are looking to join us in a day of hell, contact me or Khumo: jennifer.geel@wits.ac.za or khumo.myezo@wits.ac.za We’ll be wearing pretty T-shirts, raising money for more research, and making other people look good as we sweat. Vic will be awesome as he always is… my aim is a sub 7. His is 2 circuits in 6 hours. We’ll both be out there for the same time. He’ll be able to walk at the end of the day; I’m sure I’ll be too tired to cry.

In the next few weeks, we will update you on happenings and developments – for now, just keeping our heads above water.
